Four-some! Breen takes 4th straight Fiesta victory
After his Pirelli International success a fortnight before, Kilmurry rally star Craig Breen returned to Irish Fiesta Sporting Trophy duties in last weekend’s (2/3 May) Killarney International Rally of the Lakes -  and was once again the man to beat.
However, this would prove to be the young Waterford ace’s toughest event yet.
As Craig explains, “the rally started on Saturday morning with a daunting run up the world famous Molls Gap. After my big crash on the Circuit of Ireland, I was anxious to bring the car home in one piece - but also keen to get a respectable time on the board. I caught a slower car, which upset my rhythm and cost me vital seconds”.
Indeed he found himself well down the time-sheets at the finish. With their rivals laying down faster times, Craig and his navigator Gareth Roberts knew they needed to gather themselves and mount a charge - but couldn’t quite pull it off on the second stage.
As rain began to fall, Craig dropped more time after again coming across two slower cars that inadvertently baulked him as he tried to find his way past.
With a brief halt in the service area, his Tom Gahan Motorsport mechanics quickly made changes to the little Fiesta ST’s suspension which would prove to be crucial.
Craig promptly set the fastest time in the following stage, as his rivals failed to match his pace - or crashed trying.
“I remember saying to Gareth as we came back into the service park, ‘we’re a little bit faster now but there’s still lots of room for improvement’. But we were now up to second place and I was getting into my stride”.
Another fastest time on stage five brought the Gallo-Irish pair to within two seconds of the lead. It was now time to ‘give it death’, as they say in rallying and a stunning drive saw them develop what was to become an unassailable advantage, as the other crews struggled to make it to the finish line.
“Gareth and I are over the moon,” Craig told waiting journalists. “We had a hell of a lot of luck, especially as our competitors pushed us hard but began to fall by the wayside. Luck can be a factor in rallying and thankfully, today it was on our side!”
Saturday’s triumph has extended Breen and Roberts’ lead in the Irish Fiesta Sporting Trophy Championship to put them fifteen points clear of their nearest rivals.

Rally to start with 2 runs in a row over Molls Gap
For the 30th Rally of the Lakes KDMC have introduced an extra challenge for competitors in that the first stage at Molls Gap will be immediately followed by another run over this world famous stage.
This will then be followed by a double loop of 3 stages to the east and north of Killarney with centralised service in the Greenglens Arena in Millstreet.
On day two the rally will again start with (1 run) over Molls Gap followed by a double loop of the three classic stages Healy Pass, Cods Head and Ardgroom.
Centralised service through out the day will be in Castletownbere and the rally finishes with the other great classic Kilmackillogue.

OSI Continues as Title Sponsors for 30th Rally of the Lakes
Killarney and District Motor Club have released details of the 30th International Rally of the Lakes which takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend May 1st to 3rd. Ordnance Survey Ireland continues as title sponsors, maintaining an association which was first established in 1990.Additional support comes from The Gleneagle Hotel Killarney, where the Rally of the Lakes has been based since 1980. The 2009 OSI Rally of the Lakes is the third round of the Tarmac Rally Championship, the second round of the Thomond Crystal Southern 4 Championship and is also a counting round of both the Tarmac Historic Championship and the Southern 4 Historic Championship. Day 1 of the event will be a round of the Fiesta Sports Trophy, while the National section of the event will count for both the Southern 4 Championship and the Tarmac Modified Trophy. Clerk of the Course Gary McCormick, now in his fifth year in charge, has introduced a number of novel features in this year’s event. The most significant of these is a double run over Molls Gap as the opening two stages of the 2009 Rally. The stage will also have a new start location.First car will tackle Stage I at 08.00 on Saturday morning and is due back at the start for the second run at 10.05. With continuous action on the stage from 08.00 to approximately 11.30, Molls Gap is obviously the place to be on Saturday. After SS 2 the crews tackle Gortnagane, which finishes in Millstreet where the cars go into service at the Green Glens Arena in Millstreet. Two stages to the north and west of Millstreet, including one not used before, bring the cars back to the start of stage 6 at Gortnagane, followed by service and a repeat of stages 4 and 5 as the final two stages of the first leg of the rally. Following the traditional free service hour on Sunday morning the cars head for Molls Gap for the first of the Sunday Stages , followed by Healy Pass and then into Castletownbere for service. The traditional versions of Cods Head and Ardgroom follow before Healy Pass 2 brings the crews back to Castletown for service.Cods Head, Ardgroom and Kilmackillogue make up the final three stages of the 2009 Rally of the Lakes with the first car due to finish the final stage at 16.02 and at the finish Ramp at the Gleneagle Hotel at 17.22. Historics will join the Rally at the start of Stage 5 while it is hoped that it will be possible to introduce the Juniors at the start of Day 2.
