O’Mahony/Higgins claims maiden victory on Skibbereen Mini Stages Rally
Carrigaline driver Brian O’Mahony notched-up his maiden rally victory as he won Sunday’s (April 29) Skibbereen Mini Stages Rally.

O’Mahony and Mayo co-driver John Higgins brought home their OM Concrete Products and Fitzsamuels Insurance-backed Super 1600 Renault Clio a comfortable 37 seconds ahead of the Ford Escort of Ed Synan and Anthony Jordan to claim their first outright honours on an event.

The crew were seeded at number three for the Rosscarbery-based 40-mile tarmac rally and got off to a fine start as they were second after the opening stage, just 0.4 seconds down on early leaders James Stafford and Amy Ryan in the Darrian T90.

O’Mahony and Higgins moved into the lead on stage two as they set the pace and the Darrian crew failed to complete the test with a problem. An overshoot on stage three cost them around six seconds but after being the fastest again, they extended their lead and never looked back despite suffering with a broken alternator belt in the closing stages.

“It’s great to get my first outright rally win, it’s a good feeling and I’d like to thank all my sponsors and my service crew, O’Leary Motorsport. The stages were fantastic and we really enjoyed the day,” 22-year-old O’Mahony said.

O’Mahony and Higgins will return to action as soon as this weekend when they contest round three of the Irish Tarmac Championship (ITC), the Killarney-based Rally of the Lakes (May 5-6).

The crew are not taking part in the full series this season as they are competing in the Dunlop National Rally Championship, but the Rally of the Lakes is the second of three outings in the ITC for the pair this year.

They have their sights set on a win in class 6 and are also targeting finishing as the top 2WD car.

“Last weekend has set us up nicely for this weekend on the Rally of the Lakes and given us a boost in confidence,” O’Mahony continued. “I’ve done this event twice before and it’s a rally I enjoy with good stages. We’ll be pushing for the class victory and I’d also like us to finish as the leading 2WD crew.”

Entries for this event have begun to come in quickly over the past 3 days.
There are now 50 entries received and many more enquires have been replied to over Patrick’s weekend. It is expected that this event will have a full and complete entry as it is ideally suited to clubmen who find difficultly in acquiring entries in eg. West Cork, Kerry, Rally of the Lakes and other major upcoming events. The event consists of 2 stages repeated with a stage mileage of approximately 40 miles. Two classic stages are being run in the Rosscarbery/Glandore area with centralized servicing in Drinagh village and rally headquarters at the Celtic Ross Hotel Rosscarbery.

Parc Ferme will be located at the Central Race Track in Leap and scrutiny will take place at Hayes Caravan park, Castle Freake (signposted from the N71)
Come to West Cork for a weekend in April. Good stages, excellent headquarters, relaxed timing and good craic. Looking forward to seeing you!
