It was very special to have World Champion Sebastien Loeb and his co driver Daniel Elena here on this Murphy Construction Cork 20 Rally. The Citroen crew turned on the style, setting a string of fastest times throughout the rally and only easing back on the final stage. Dani Sordo/Mark Marti were a solid 2nd on their first visit to an Irish rally which was quite an achievement. Dani was driving the second works Citroen, the older model Xsara. Mark Higgins and his co driver Rory Kennedy drove their Pirelli Subaru hard throughout and 3rd place was a terrific result but not enough to deny Eugene Donnelly & Paul Kiely in their Reid Motorsport Impreza WRC The Global Group Tarmac Championship title. Mikko Hirvonen in the M-Sport Ford Focus WRC was also on a learning curve in preparation for Rally Ireland. An early puncture cost them a podium place but it was still a fine result to finish 5th.
Colm Murphy backed off towards the end, but still won group N and finished 12th o/a. Colm and his co driver Ger Loughrey retain their Group N Tarmac title. As Colm eased back to preserve his GpN Impreza and make sure of a finish so Michael Barrable speeded up to come into the leaderboard and make it an all world rally car top 10. Owen Murphy unfortunately crashed his GpN lancer out on the penultimate stage. Kevin Kelleher was 2nd GpN, Alan Ring 3rd.
Phil Collins/Derek Brannigan have won the National Rally in their Escort from Terence O’Shaughnessy/Eugene McGrath in their Corolla. Tom Holton/Francis Kenny overcame an early accident to take 3rd in their Celica. Martin McCormack/Liam Moynihan had a brilliant run in their Escort to win the Historic Rally from Todd Falvey/Dan Barry in their Porsche 911. Jonny Greer/Jonny Hart won the Fiesta Sporting Trophy from Alastair Fisher/Barry McNulty. Alastair & Barry win the Irish Fiesta Championship after a tie break with Jonny, Alastair’s Galway result the tie decider.
As the strains of the French National Anthem drifted around the Radisson Hotel Sebastien Loeb brought his Citroen on to the finish ramp and said. “The feeling with the car is better. It was a bit wet in the morning of the first day but otherwise dry and we would have liked more wet but it was good”. It is all about preparation for Rally Ireland of course and Sebastien’s team mate Dani Sordo said. “I learned a lot”. Mikko Hirvonen said “Everything worked well and we were made very welcome here. The stages were fast and the weather was too dry but we learned a lot, glad we came”.
Mark Higgins reported a major moment towards the end when he braked too late for a 2 right into 4 left but otherwise he was glad to be on the pace and mixing it with the best. He said “Derek McGarrity has given us a very reliable car through the year, great support from Pirelli and we were very close to the title, just one poor result away earlier in the year”. Eugene Donnelly said “this is our 4th Tarmac Championship win and this one is as sweet as the first. It was a difficult year and Reid Motorsport stepped in to help when it all went right and then all went wrong in Galway. I am a little disappointed not to stay with Mark today, made a small mistake with the tyres and then there was no point.”

. Tarmac Titans Rev Up for Cork ‘20’
The Murphy Construction Cork ‘20’ International Rally will once again provide the stage for a show down between the tarmac titans of Irish rallying on the weekend of 28, 29 and 30 September next. The event, which is the final round of the Global Group Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, has attracted entries from all the major players in the 2007 championship, including current championship leader, Eugene Donnelly. The Maghera native, who will compete in the event in a Subaru Impreza, is 9 points ahead of nearest rival, Mark Higgins, also driving a Subaru. However, with 50% bonus points up for grabs in Cork and Higgins keen to repeat the success he had in the event last year, the leadership race is sure to come down to the wire in Cork. Eamonn Boland, currently in third place in the championship standings, will be partnered by Francis Regan on the weekend of 28, 29 and 30 September. Kris Meeke, who drove to a spectacular win in the Rally of the Lakes in May, will also compete on the event, but his choice of co-driver and car have yet to be revealed. Former Murphy Construction Cork ‘20’ winner, Tim McNulty, fresh from his success on the Galway Summer Rally, will compete in an S11 and the event will also see the welcome return to the Cork countryside of Derek McGarrity, who will be partnered by Kerry native, Diarmuid Falvey. The Murphy Construction Cork ‘20’ International Rally 2007 will prove to be a family affair for the McHale dynasty with Austin and sons, Gareth and Aaron, all featuring in the top twenty competitors. Aaron, who recently clinched the Dunlop National Championship title, and brother Gareth will certainly rise to their father’s challenge, but as a four-time winner of the event, it may be that Austin’s experience could give him the edge. The international aspect of the event cannot be underestimated with the top three competitors, France’s Sebastian Loeb, Finland’s Mikko Hirvonen and Loeb’s Spanish team mate Dani Sordo, adding a new dimension to this year’s event. The chance to see the battle between the stars of the World Rally Championship and our homegrown talent is too good to miss! Spectators will be able to see these men and their machines up close and personal at the Ceremonial Start to the event, which will take place in the Grand Parade, Cork city centre on the evening of Friday, 28 September. Further details of this element of the event will be available on the club website, www.munstercarclub.com, next week. Finally, rally programmes detailing the entrants and routes of the Murphy Construction Cork ‘20’ International Rally will be available throughout Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford from the weekend of 22 and 23 September onwards. Details of outlets will be available on www.munstercarclub.com. Final Instructions, Time and Distance Schedules, HQ/Scrunity Map available by clicking here: www.munstercarclub.com Details on Helicopter Registration available by clicking here: www.munstercarclub.com 023 TILES SOUTHERN 4 RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW ROUND 4 The Cork “20” International Rally (Sept 28-30th) hosts round 4 of the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally Championship for 2007. 023 Tiles of Cork and Bandon are again sponsoring the series; their sixth year acting as title sponsors, and the continued backing from them has ensured that the Championship grows in stature with each passing year. Since it’s inception the championship has gone from strength to strength and this year is no exception with well over 100 crews registered after the Ravens Rock, the Carrick-on-Suir promoted event being the last event where competitors could sign up. Round 1,The Quality Hotels West Cork Rally saw Michael Barrable/Dermot O Gorman(Focus WRC), taking maximum points after an enthralling weekend long battle between themselves and the Impreza WRC of Tim McNulty/Anthony Nestor.A puncture for McNulty on SS 13 cost him a minute loss which meant Barrable caught and passed him on the stage. McNulty fought back on SS 14 and tried a little too hard,a spin on the stage meant he dropped 5 seconds to Barrable,he again attacked on ss 15 and took the 5 seconds back which had Barrable 28 seconds clear going into the last stage ‘Sam’s Cross. Barrable drove a cautious but fast final stage with McNulty going through 17 seconds quicker than him resulting in an 11 second win for Barrable /O Gorman. Last years Champions Melvyn Evans/Sean Mullaly succumbed to electrical problems on day one, which lead to their eventual retirement from the event. In the classes Kevin Kelleher took the spoils in Group N with James O Sullivan second and Mark Nangle third. Kevin O Donoghue put in an appearance in his MK 2 Escort and took full points in class 14 for his efforts, with Conor Curley(Mk2) second and Conor Cavanagh(Mk2) third in the class. Class 13 was won by Wesley Patterson. The OSI Killarney International Rally of the Lakes was next on the list of events and Melvyn Evans bad luck was to continue,Denis Cronin, who scored 14 points in West Cork, was unable to capitalise on this or the fact that Michael Barrable did not enter the lakes as he was unfortunate enough to register a DNF here also,as indeed did Tim McNulty. Kevin O Donoughue took the Evo out in the “Lakes” and took the 20 overall points on offer to take the overall lead in the championship. Wesley Patterson also had a good clean run in Killarney and the 16 overall points he took was enough to see him in second overall after the “Lakes”.Kevin Kelleher was third in the overall standings. In the classes John Hickey lead class 15 in his “Fubaru” from Philip Cross in an Escort Cosworth and Ger O Donovan, also in an Escort Cosworth. Kevin O Donoghues 10 points in West Cork was enough to see him keep the lead in class 14 as Conor Curley did not enter the “Lakes” and Conor Cavanagh recorded a DNF. Wesley Patterson still lead class 13 with 9 class points to add to the 10 he collected in West Cork.Michael Barrable lead class 8 although on the same 10 points as Tim McNulty in spite of the fact that he did not enter in Killarney, the reason being the retirement of Tim McNulty from the event. Kevin Kelleher held the lead in Gp N from Mark Nangle and Sean Flanagan in third in the class. Round three, the Ravens Rock ended in a little confusion with the overall and class 8 results being provisional pending an appeal to the stewards of the meeting. However, that appeal was subsequently withdrawn and the results were made final after a bit of a wait. Denis Cronin took the 20 points as the first S4 championship registered competitor over the line (second overall from Aaron McHale) which moves him up to third place(35 points) going into the Cork 20,just two points off second placed James M Stafford(37) and 13 behind overall leader Kevin O Donoghue with two rounds to go. Mark Nangle collected 14 points for 4th place in the Championship runners. The classes are also being very hotly contested with class 15 throwing up a fantastic battle with Ger O Donovan(Escort Cosworth) leading the class on 21 points with the similar car of Philip Cross in second, just ONE point behind and John Hickeys Fubaru just two points further back. Class 13 is also providing edge of the seat stuff with William Buttimer(Escort) leading the class on 22 points with James M Stafford(Darrian) in second on 21 and Wesley Patterson in third just two points further back. DD Murphy and Gerard O Connell share the spoils in class 14 with 20 points each. Denis Cronin leads class 8 from Michael Barrable with Tim McNulty in third place. Mark Nangle leads class 4 on 27 points form Kevin Kelleher(19) and Sean Flanagan on 14. So,whether your interest is WRC’s Mk 2’s,EVO,s or whatever, there is an enthralling battle in prospect on the Cork “20” in ALL the S4 classes However it pans out there will be some very hot competition out there from class two to fifteen in what has become one of the most established domestic Rally Championships in Europe. Organisers of the Murphy Construction Cork "20" International Rally, the final round of the Global Group Irish Tarmac Championship, have received entries from World Championship teams, BP-Ford and Citroen.
BP-Ford finally confirmed this evening, Thursday, that Mikko Hirvonen will drive their Ford Focus in the two-day Cork event.
In addition, Citroen has also declared that both World champion, Sebastien Loeb and team mate, Dani Sordo ill also participate in the 16 stage rally in their Citroen C4 WRC's.
Currently in the World Rally Championship, Marcus Gronholm (Ford) leads reigning champion, Sebastien Loeb (Citroen) by ten points and in the Manufacturer's title, Ford lead Citroen by 46 points. Following their appearances in Cork they will compete in the WRC events in Spain, France and Japan all before Rally Ireland in November. BP-Ford will enter a Focus RS WRC on the Cork '20' International Rally the final round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, on 28 - 30 September. The entry is to provide the team with more experience of Irish roads in preparation for the WRC's maiden visit to Rally Ireland in November and follows Grönholm's victory on the Galway International Rally there in February.
No driver has yet been nominated for the Cork event. Press Release Preparations are well underway for the Murphy Construction Cork ‘20’ International Rally, which takes place this year on the weekend of 28, 29 and 30 September. Despite the date being a week earlier than usual, a high level of interest has already been expressed by a large number of crews, both national and international, highlighting the high esteem in which the long standing event is held by competitors.
Clerk of the Course Frank O’Mahony, along with his committee, including Deputy Clerk, Kevin O’Riordan, will once again use traditional and novel routes to test even the most seasoned campaigners, while undoubtedly attracting the cream of British and international competitors, as has been the case consistently throughout the recent past.
Kieran Murphy of Murphy Construction, Carrigtwohill, Co Cork has once again stepped in as the main sponsor of the event. Kieran enjoyed great success in last year’s event where he and driver Liam McCarthy finished in the top ten in their Toyota Corolla WRC. New to the rally this year is the Radisson SAS Hotel and Spa, Little Island, Cork who have taken up the mantle as secondary sponsors and HQ for this year’s event. Located just east of Cork city and near the Jack Lynch tunnel, the hotel provides easy access to the main routes to Cork from Dublin and the Rosslare ferryport, as well as from Cork Airport. With the hotel also offereing a state of the art gym, spa facilities, bar and restaurant, it is sure to be a hit with competitor, official and spectator alike.
The event will be launched by motorsport & civic dignataries in Radisson SAS Hotel and Spa, Little Island, Cork the Friday 24 August 2007 at 8 p.m.
Entry forms and regulations are now available through the club website below. The closing date for all entries is Friday, 7 September 2007 and given the level of interest expressed to date and the fact that the event represents one of the last major Irish events in advance of Rally Ireland in November, competitors are advised to submit their completed entry forms at the earliest opportunity.
